Short Prayers for Healing, Work and Strength (with Examples)

When you don’t know what to say, it helps to start with a few words someone else has written. These 10 short prayers were written by the Penned Grace team as examples. Each is three to five sentences and comes with one Bible verse. Pray them as they are, or change the words to fit your situation.

A simple shape for a short prayer

  1. Speak to God: Father, Lord, Jesus.
  2. Say thank you for one thing.
  3. Name what you need as plainly as you can. "My scan on Thursday" is clearer than "my health."
  4. Leave the outcome with Him and ask for peace.
  5. Close: "In Jesus’ name, amen." Catholics often begin and end with the Sign of the Cross.

Write your prayers down

A prayer written in a notebook is easy to look back on later. The SOAP method ends each day’s reading with a short written prayer, and the free Lord’s Prayer copywork page is a good place to start. If you are visiting someone who is ill, see Bible verses for the sick for what to say and what to write in a card.

Prayer can bring comfort, but it does not replace medical care. If your health or your mood keeps getting in the way of daily life, please see a doctor or a counselor.
