Frequently asked questions
If your question is not here, please write to us.
Does Penned Grace cost anything?
The app is free to download, and writing scripture is free: every translation, the whole Bible, all three writing modes, four grid styles, the verse of the day, six writing plans, streaks and milestones, and share cards. There are no ads. Premium is an optional subscription, monthly or yearly with a 7-day free trial the first time you subscribe, that adds PDF export, replay, gold ink and a full colour palette, five paper styles and four more writing plans. See Premium.
Can I cancel Premium at any time?
Yes. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android, go to Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions in Google Play. Premium stays on until the end of the current period, and cancelling at least 24 hours before the free trial ends means you are not charged.
Why write scripture by hand?
Writing slows you down, so you read every word, and verses you have written tend to stay with you. See How to Start Handwriting the Bible.
Do you have printable scripture writing sheets?
Yes. The printables page has free lined scripture writing pages and SOAP devotional pages in US Letter and A4, free to print and share with your small group.
Are there ads?
No. Penned Grace has no ads and does not track what you do to target advertising.
Can I use Apple Pencil on iPad?
Yes. On iPad you can write with Apple Pencil, and the ink responds to your pressure. On Android tablets you can write with a stylus, and pressure-sensitive pens like Samsung S Pen respond to pressure too.
Do I need an account?
No. You do not need an email address or an account. You can start writing as soon as you open the app. Your writing is stored on your device and included in its iCloud or Google backup.
Which Bible translations are included?
The Berean Standard Bible is built in, and you can download the World English Bible. For Chinese, the 1919 Chinese Union Version is built in, in Traditional and Simplified characters. All of them are in the public domain.
Can Catholics use Penned Grace?
Yes, for writing scripture by hand. The built-in translations are the Berean Standard Bible and the Chinese Union Version, which are Protestant translations with 66 books. Catholic translations with 73 books, such as the New American Bible, are not included.
Can I write without an Apple Pencil?
Yes. Your finger works fine, and there is a typing mode too. With a finger, the line follows your speed: faster is thinner, slower is thicker. Apple Pencil responds to how hard you press.
Which devices are supported? Is there an Android app?
Yes. Penned Grace is on the App Store and Google Play: iPhone and iPad need iOS / iPadOS 16.4 or later, and Android phones and tablets need Android 7.0 or later.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The built-in translations, writing and your calendar all work without a connection. You only need one to download the World English Bible.
What happens if I miss a day?
Milestones you have earned stay with you. Write a few words the next day and it is a new day.
Can I paste text in typing mode?
You can, but pasted text does not count toward what you have written. Only typed words do.
When does the verse of the day change?
At midnight in your phone’s time zone.
Has the content been reviewed?
Yes. The daily verses, prayers, guiding questions and reading plans have been reviewed by a pastor.
How do I delete my data?
Deleting the app removes everything stored on your phone, and we hold nothing of yours. See the support page for details.
