Psalm 118:24, Psalm 65:11 and 3 John 1:2 are short enough for the front of a birthday card. Numbers 6:24–26 is a blessing that suits anyone. For a child, Psalm 139:14 is a common choice, and for a parent or grandparent, Isaiah 46:4 or Proverbs 16:31.

Birthday Bible Verses for Cards: 12 Verses to Write by Hand

A birthday card has room for one verse and a few lines of your own. Below are twelve verses from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), grouped by who the card is for, with a note on each.

Blessings for anyone

‘May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace.’ (Numbers 6:24–26, BSB)

God gave these words to Aaron and his sons as the way to bless the Israelites (Numbers 6:22–23). Because it is already a blessing spoken over someone, it fits any birthday card.

May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed. (Psalm 20:4, BSB)

Psalm 20 is a prayer for the king “in the day of trouble.” This verse is often written for a friend starting a new job or a new plan.

Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers. (3 John 1:2, BSB)

John wrote this to his friend Gaius at the start of a short letter. Health and a soul that prospers make it read like a birthday wish.

Verses for a new year of life

This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24, BSB)

One line, easy to letter on the front of a card.

You crown the year with Your bounty, and Your paths overflow with plenty. (Psalm 65:11, BSB)

A good fit for a milestone birthday such as 30, 40 or 50.

Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:22–23, BSB)

Lamentations mourns the fall of Jerusalem, and these two verses sit in the middle of it. They suit a friend who has had a hard year.

So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12, BSB)

Psalm 90 is titled “A prayer of Moses the man of God.” It is a good verse to write for yourself on your own birthday.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11, BSB)

This comes from a letter Jeremiah sent to the exiles in Babylon, who were told they would stay there seventy years (Jeremiah 29:10). Many people read it as a promise of hope for the future.

You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand. (Psalm 16:11, BSB)

For a child

I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. (Psalm 139:14, BSB)

The verse before says God knit us together in our mother’s womb, so it is a favorite for a baby’s first birthday or a child’s card.

For parents and grandparents

Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you. (Isaiah 46:4, BSB)

God speaks to Israel about carrying them from birth to old age. Many people choose it for a parent’s or grandparent’s birthday.

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained along the path of righteousness. (Proverbs 16:31, BSB)

Short and fitting for a 70th, 80th or 90th birthday card.

What to write in a birthday card

  • “Happy birthday, Anna! This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24) So glad to celebrate you today.”
  • “Happy 80th, Grandpa. Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained along the path of righteousness. (Proverbs 16:31) Thank you for teaching us to pray.”
  • “Happy birthday! I am praying Numbers 6:24–26 over you this year.”
  1. Start with their name and “Happy birthday.”
  2. Write one verse and put the reference underneath.
  3. Add one or two lines of your own: something you saw them do this year, or what you are praying for them.
  4. If the verse is too long, write only part of it and add “excerpt” after the reference.

Write it once on scrap paper first so you know where the lines break, and let the ink dry before you close the card.
